What is HIV & AIDS
Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It gradually destroys the immune system i.e. the ability to fight infection/diseases. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the later stage of HIV infection, in which body’s immune system is weakened. As a result a number of illnesses occur.
Common Symptoms are Continuous long fever, Weight loss, Loose motions, Skin infections, TB, Cancers, Pneumonia etc. It may take around 10-12 years for a HIV positive person to reach the stage of AIDS. With treatment (Anti Retroviral therapy- ART), this duration can be further increased.
HIV spreads through: 1. Unprotected Sex with infected person, multiple sex partners 2. Sharing of contaminated syringes needles 3. Transfusion of infected blood 4. Infected mother to child.
HIV does not spread through: 1. Social interaction/Hand shake/Casual contact 2. Mosquito bite 3. Sharing Toilet seats/Swimming pools/Utensils 4. Coughing or sneezing.
