Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, which results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited movement. It is a common ailment, debilitating millions of people of all ages. There are over 100 different types.
Some common types are Osteo-Arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Gout, Autoimmune Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis. Each of these may affect the patient differently with different complications. It is therefore important to know the exact type of Arthritis that you may be suffering from so that your treatment may be planned properly.
Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects the joint, allowing for smooth movement. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, like when you walk. Without the usual amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness. While the cause of RA is not yet known, Osteo-Arthritis is a result of chronic inflammation. The risk factors include old age, overweight, injury to the affected joint, repeated stress of affected joint (baseball players, ballet dancers and construction workers).
